Seattle-based Southside were the winners of Scrub Club’s Versus Mode Challenge!

Fusing their hip-hop roots with a punk rock ethos and the sounds of indie rock, Southside formed as a side project of several rock bands united to record haphazard rap songs between tours. While they began rapping over pre-recorded beats, Southside’s current lineup features a mix of beats and samples with live instrumentation: drums, guitar, bass, and a DJ. In recent years, Southside has played showcases at South by Southwest, Northwest Music Fest, REVERBfest, and Nerd Invasion.

Southside – Liquors

Liquors

Artist: Southside
First released at shows 2009
Re-released for free 2010
Running time: 44:20

Southside’s first LP release with a full band lineup. 16 tracks of head-bobbin’, hard-rockin’ Hip Hop for your earholes!

“Coming straight from the more studious end of the Seattle Hip Hop underground – the same scene responsible for their contemporaries Optimus Rhyme and The Goondocks – “Liquors” casts misfit heroes Southside in a new musical light.

Equal parts intentional refinement and natural musical evolution, it forgoes the loose posse cuts and mixtape-oriented style of its predecessor, “Please Southside, Don’t Hurt ‘Em,” for a more cohesive approach, but refuses to abandon that trademark Southside wit and swagger.” – Z from Hipster Please

Artist: Various Artists
Released online February 2010
Running time: 72:52

Scrub Club’s fierce Versus Mode audio / visual competition in mid-2009 led to four new leveled-up artists on the label for 2010.

Held on Scrub Club’s official community site, GeekAmigo.com, Versus Mode was a contest that had a group of up-and-coming artists go head to head for some challenges as well as team up for other goals. Out of a great amount of entrants, only 13 were selected to compete. Among the missions were recording new songs, getting professional photoshoots, promoting themselves, updating their web presence… In the end, when there were three finalists left, they competed against eachother live on stage to become Scrub Club’s next signed artist.
