Artist: Southside
Originally released on physical copy in 2007
Re-released online September 2010
Running time: 53:33

An oldie but a goodie (does anyone actually say that shit?), “Don’t Hurt ‘Em” was Southside’s debut album back in 2007. Previously available in physical disc format only, we are now glad to share this piece of Seattle’s independent history with all you Scrubs out there.

This Hip Hop / Rock / Funk release is chock full of both wit and witlessness and contains different versions of Southside songs you already know and love – “Downtown,” “Blackout,” and “Wake Up.” Catch some past tunes that are still good for your ears, and see how the band has progressed in the last few years. What time is it? I was just about to tell ya…

Various Artists – Versus Mode

Artist: Various Artists
Released online February 2010
Running time: 72:52

Scrub Club’s fierce Versus Mode audio / visual competition in mid-2009 led to four new leveled-up artists on the label for 2010.

Held on Scrub Club’s official community site, GeekAmigo.com, Versus Mode was a contest that had a group of up-and-coming artists go head to head for some challenges as well as team up for other goals. Out of a great amount of entrants, only 13 were selected to compete. Among the missions were recording new songs, getting professional photoshoots, promoting themselves, updating their web presence… In the end, when there were three finalists left, they competed against eachother live on stage to become Scrub Club’s next signed artist.

Those three finalists were King Pheenix, Diabeats, and Thunderball from Southside. Thunderball rocked the stage at Nerd Invasion in Pensacola, Florida like no other and walked away with the grand title – but with his blessing, all three finalists as well as a runner-up, StarF, were integrated into Scrub Club also.

This compilation includes 10 of the most notable tracks from the duration of the contest. They’re not necessarily the best songs produced from Versus Mode as far as overall quality goes, but they are definitely the ones that stood out from the rest and had the most heart (or made us laugh our asses off, one of the two). Following these 10 tracks is the recording of the actual 40 minute live finale of Versus Mode, where you can hear all three finalists giving it their all to a very hungry crowd.

Southside – Liquors

Liquors

Artist: Southside
First released at shows 2009
Re-released for free 2010
Running time: 44:20

Southside’s first LP release with a full band lineup. 16 tracks of head-bobbin’, hard-rockin’ Hip Hop for your earholes!

“Coming straight from the more studious end of the Seattle Hip Hop underground – the same scene responsible for their contemporaries Optimus Rhyme and The Goondocks – “Liquors” casts misfit heroes Southside in a new musical light.

Equal parts intentional refinement and natural musical evolution, it forgoes the loose posse cuts and mixtape-oriented style of its predecessor, “Please Southside, Don’t Hurt ‘Em,” for a more cohesive approach, but refuses to abandon that trademark Southside wit and swagger.” – Z from Hipster Please

Seattle-based Southside were the winners of Scrub Club’s Versus Mode Challenge!

Fusing their hip-hop roots with a punk rock ethos and the sounds of indie rock, Southside formed as a side project of several rock bands united to record haphazard rap songs between tours. While they began rapping over pre-recorded beats, Southside’s current lineup features a mix of beats and samples with live instrumentation: drums, guitar, bass, and a DJ. In recent years, Southside has played showcases at South by Southwest, Northwest Music Fest, REVERBfest, and Nerd Invasion.

“If Frank Zappa were alive today, this is what his music would sound like.” – MasterWorks

Tony Snark

Following in his father’s footsteps, Tony Snark has been creating hand-forged sounds since a child– becoming the youngest scratch DJ at the age of 13. While observing the effects of his experimental beats on free-range cattle in Europe, Snark was captured by eastern european music producers and forced to re-create Wu Tang beats on a makeshift MPC constructed entirely out of parts from a 1976 Datsun B210. He narrowly escaped by throwing down a massive bass drop, the result of which damaged his heart, which is now only kept beating by an ipod chest plate with shuffle capabilities. Since then, Snark has vowed to rid the Earth of all wack DJs and producers, joining southside to battle anyone in his frequency range to save humanity from this terrible, growing threat.

Slim Dickens

Slim Dickens has used the guitar and keys to bring the rock to several Bellingham and Seattle bands throughout the years. A few years ago he had the fortune of meeting and working with Catfish (aka Buc Preston) and inevitably joined forces with the Southside militia. Slim’s buttery riff laden rock was injected with a healthy dose of meaty hip hop, rounding out the live band dynamic and formulating a formidable audio assault unit to back up the MCs.  Slim also heads up Southside’s visual assault unit, designing eye candy and propaganda to help promote the band and build the brand.  In his spare time, Slim enjoys long walks on the beach, quiet time at home, and going to Disneyland with his family.

Buc Preston

Damn, why did it have to go down like that. I knew better, we all knew better but here we are….again. I vaguely recall the smell of pine trees, maybe it was an air freshener, I don’t really know. Hell, I don’t really care. The only thing that matters anymore is the faith, the belief, the knowledge that this…this thing can never happen again.
God bless.

Reno

Reno was raised in the armpit of America also known as the biggest little city in the world. Yet, despite the rumor, it wasn’t big enough for this high powered rythym crazed mutant. So he left his home behind in search of like-minded soldiers to build an unstoppable militia of musical mayhem. Then at long last his search was rewarded when he crossed paths with Thunderball and Buc Preston who recruited RENO into the ranks of SOUTHSIDE. Sustained by syncopation, solid meter, and heavy grooves his raucous style creates a pocket big enough to accommodate soundscapes of cosmic proportions. Fueled by the yetti’s strength and the internal clock of an android RENO is a veritable force to be reckoned with when bringing the mutha’ effin’ ruckus. BEWARE!!!!!!!

Space

Space (aka yoga joe the foot cruncher) maintains the bottom end of Southside’s signature wall of sound.  Also known as a part-time beatmaker and hookwriter, he leads his own rock-n-roll side project (Seven Horses).  Space has also played with Sex in Taboo Creek, Mergatroid, and The Game Players.

Thunderball

Thunderball is the driving force behind Southside, co-founder and producer.  National runner-up in Chuck D’s Power to the People and the Beats competition and solo SS representative at the Nerd Invasion Versus Mode finals (bringin home that bacon).  Currently residing in the Orion sector of Moonbase IV and telecommuting via hologram.
