Cryptology: Cipher

Artist: Untested Methods
Released online December 2010
Running time: 72:33

Untested Methods reaches deep into the sound archives to bring you this collection of songs from a four year span of mad-doctoring instrumentals.

Even with the random age of some of these tracks, they all seem to fit together in perfect synergy. It’s best described as a 16bit soundtrack to the life story of a gritty anti-hero… Perhaps said being is Untested Methods after all. If that’s the case, you’re in for an audiobiographical treat.

Clocking in at well over an hour, this mix of electronic music is vastly instrumental and full of dark, energetic life. There is one song with vocals, however – “Out in the Black,” which is one of his first offerings from a low fidelity era. If you’ve ever wanted to take a ride in Untested’s brain Johnny Mnemonic-style, then this is your chance. Let the scenescapes of Cryptology: Cipher take you to distant digital lands.

Songs and Voices

Artist: Untested Methods
Originally released online 2009
Re-released online 2010
Running time: 20:32

The “Songs and Voices” EP is a mixed bag (of holding). While it contains both things Untested is well-known for (nerdy subject matter and emotional singing), it doesn’t approach either straight-on as you might expect.

For instance, there’s a track about vampires. One about the hit game “Fallout.” And another about Dungeons and Dragons. But they’re not readily visible with key words and situations you normally hear about, they’re described more in an thoughtful sense. Sound different? Well, it certainly is.

The “mixed bag” comment comes from the fact that there really is no central theme going on with this project… The music is just what came to life when Untested Methods combined electronic beats, acoustic guitar, and his own vocals. The end result is fluid, trippy music that will bounce back and forth inside of your head as these strange ballads take you deeper into the eclectic mind of Untested.

RAT21POW20 EP

Artist: Untested Methods
Released online November 2010
Running time: 19:44

Also featuring: MadHatter.

“RAT21POW20″ was undoubtedly one of the best songs off of Untested Methods’ “Alt+F4 My Life,” released in 2010.

To bring even more flavor to the track, this EP hosts three brand new remixes – two from outside artists and one amazing “Clinger Version” with a beat by Untested and gritty guitar work by Joshua Clingenpeel. But it doesn’t stop there – besides these remixes, you also get the Clinger Version instrumental to rock out to, as well as two completely new songs:

“Real Dark Arts” is a wicked wrock / wrap (if you will) track that deals with the more sinister parts of the Harry Potter universe, and “F.T.R. (I Brag the Most)” is a rough, witty, and bloody Dungeons and Dragons-themed song straight from the most golden of locked chests.

Do you dig the good ol’ 8 bit Nintendo Entertainment System? Do you love Final Fantasy? Do you have a thing for little dudes in cloaks and floppy wizard hats? If you answered at least one of these questions “Hell yeah!” without hesitating, then this album is for you.

Untested Methods takes the original Final Fantasy soundtrack, re-orchestrates it from the ground up, then remixes it with hard-hitting beats and extras. Originally meant as an awesome instrumental project that Nerdcore rappers could use to record or freestyle over, this release is dope just for standalone jam music as well. In fact, why don’t you put it on your airship’s system while you cruise Coneria? Princess Sara will surely think you’re fly (yeah, it’s a pun).

Alt+F4 My Life

Artist: Untested Methods
Released online August 2010
Running time: 50:21

Also featuring: Karmageddon and Gl1tch.

Describing this album is a tough task. Imagine a world where there are living, breathing 8 Bit Nintendos walking around. Now imagine what those Nintendos listen to on their college radio stations. It’s one-third that. Some of those Nintendos are in the back of a hard rock concert, making out (probably by blowing in each other’s cartridge slots). That’s another third of the sound. The last third of the vibe resembles a lonely, heartbroken Nintendo laying on its bedroom floor with headphones on, listening to songs of love while wishing they had someone that felt the same way.

Alt+F4 My Life is electronic in nature, but ends up being composed of many different genres. The oldschool synth-band-style Pop crooning mixed with Rock and Hip Hop cadences is truly a standout presence, and with all of the references to geek culture and emotional songs straight from the heart, this album is guaranteed to speak to you on some if not all levels.
