Submerged in the Minneapolis, Minnesota music scene (yes, it exists!), StarF is as much of an artist as he is a fan of Hip Hop. After writing lyrics for years and realizing he needed to find a way to transmute his words into song, he began his journey into rapping around April of 2006. After years of hard work and improvement, he finally found his way to Scrub Club, which was not just another record label, but a collection of people who he could relate to and call his family. Raised by internet culture and obsessed with music, StarF blends a mixture of poetics and edgy humor into everything he produces. Every new project is approached as the beginning of something that will better himself rather than a means to an end, and as so, StarF is consistently progressing and leveling up within the Nerdcore community. While socially awkward to a noticeable degree, StarF still loves everyone in the community he meets. Despite any awkwardness, he will never hesitate to grab a mic and rock it for a crowd.

MadHatter considers himself an “everyman” in the underground entertainment business. While he openly claims not be the best at what he does, he does put in an unbelievable amount of effort into his work and strives to do better. Always learning, always evolving, he not only runs the Scrub Club label, he also produces music, records and mixes albums, spits complex, mathematical flows, contributes artwork both digital and traditional, does graphics design for the site and printed products, builds and keeps all of the Scrub sites updated, creates gaming mechanics, handles promotions and public relations including booking, runs audio / visual equipment, runs printing presses, and lots of other tasks that most labels have to outsource. It’s a lot of work, but keeping Scrub Club going is just as important to him as taking care of a step family. Except… a good step family.

He has gained awards and achievements both big and small for his music, played a few dozen shows, helped other artists out with unending support, and is the well-known “good guy” in the independent scene.

Into the music game since 2001 and an always dedicated worker in the official day job market, he knows a great deal on how to handle business and make good development decisions and hopes to someday to run an all-ages entertainment venue that features art, spoken word, live music, and food fit for fat kids like himself. That way, he can keep on supporting his vision as well as helping out as many other artists as he possibly can.

Scrub Club is his dream, and he has already accomplished what he sent out to do in the first place… changed the life of at least one person with his music. Now that he has what he’s always wanted, he drives forward to enjoy the rest of the ride. It’s all plus, baby!

“Been encased in flesh, still feeling android fresh” – KPX

Listen up, true believers. King Pheenix (Scott Shepley) has been a recording artist since 2003. Getting his start at the age of 15, rapping in street cyphers and plenty of freestyle sessions, the fire was steady lit. Throughout the years, the “Determinator” perfected his craft and lived by one mantra - make Hip Hop by any means necessary.  Now revitalized by an introduction into the Nerdcore community by fellow musician (and longtime friend) MC 8bit, the mission has changed – make real Hip Hop with a nerdy twinge.

It’s all been up from there. In 2010, KPX’s debut “Hero vs. Villain” surfaced under the Scrub Club label, and changed the game in it’s own unique fashion. A comic book / music amalgam, it has become a memorable foray into Hip Hop storytelling. Some hailes it as an “instant classic” and “the Pheenix we’ve been waiting for.” Leaving the listener with a cliffhanger, one question has been asked frequently… When will “The Answer” return?

Since joining Scrub Club in 2009, Pheenix has performed on multiple stages including Florida’s Nerd Invasion 2009 and Nerdapalooza 2010, the gaming mainstay of Indianapolis’ Gen Con 2010, and several places across the east coast with many artists including Mega Ran and MC Frontalot.

‘Tis the year, where the fire is turned up to 11. Pheenix is currently working on many projects, Including his Sophomore LP “Funhouse of Ashes,” slated for a summer 2011 release.

In a successful band biography, you want to mix things up just enough to ensure it sounds like something that could be interesting on a greater level than just “the usual old garage band.” Throw in an anecdote that sums up how you think and how you play. If your van lit on fire and you were stranded in the middle of the desert between shows and you ended up writing two of your most popular songs while waiting for a tow truck, find a way to integrate that story. It will humanize you even further, provide a back story for your music and help you connect with fans.

Remember above all else that anything written for the web must be snappy, relatively brief and quick to grab attention. Try to keep your band bio shorter than 300-500 words while fitting as much information into it as possible. Don’t drone on about any one topic and always keep your audience in mind. The right pitch and tone can be extremely effective in making sure your profile really pops off the screen.

“Kabuto is a mammoth creature in size and strength with a humanoid build. Many spikes adorn the creature’s body, while its maw is fierce and imposing.”

So reads the description on Kabuto’s MySpace. In some senses, it fails to tell the whole story. At the same time, however, it tells you everything you need to know.

A 2-year rap veteran at the time of this writing, Kabuto emerged in 2007 as a shit-talking, talented, and ruthlessly inventive alternative to the flow-deficient and gimmicky internet rap community. He quickly developed a reputation as a truculent personality, having engaged in one-sided beefs with such luminaries as MC Chris, documentary filmmaker Dan Lamoreaux, and pirate rapper Captain Dan.

Kabuto is thought to have originally formed out of dark matter near Tau Ceti some 2 million years ago. Since his arrival on Earth, there has been much speculation as to his true form. He himself has not helped matters, describing himself in turn as a python, a deity, an alien, and incredibly ill. Over time, this has stabilized somewhat, and to all appearances, Kabuto seems to exist as a kind of Holy Trinity – rapper, snake, and alien beast. It has even been theorized that Kabuto is, in fact, an alter-ego of famed Nerdcore rapper MC Frontalot.

Diabeats is a diabetic cyborg, operating on an insulin pump to keep her alive. When she isn’t pondering the existential quandries of the universe with Wilford Brimley, she raps in a dark, tongue-in-cheek, satirical style that acts as an extension of her poetic background. Writing is her primary passion and music her silver wife. In March of 2009, she penned her first Hip Hop song and was immediately swept up into the arms of nerdcore, learning under nerdcore vets like MC_Loki and Scrub Club’s own Deafinition. While she tended to stay in the background, writing at her own pace, and absorbing information, she was tirelessly encouraged by fellow artists and started projects like the Vampire: The Masquerade-inspired “Amor Sanguinis” album with MC_Loki. Involved in music and the study of music theory since the age of 8, she plays piano, trumpet, and sings as well.

Outside of emceeing, Diabeats is a broke-ass college student pursuing a double major in English and Spanish. She is an amateur linguist and bibliophile, a lover of all things literary, and a mad-word scientist. In the summers, she works as a substitute assistant at a school for migrant education translating and gossiping with Latina toddlers.

At a glance, Diabeats is a shy, nerdy, goth girl who owns way too many Star Wars shirts and can master any rhythm video game you can throw at her. Put her on stage, though, and she transforms into an aggressive, liberated, dancing harlot of rhyming. Everything that she is unable to be in daily life, she can be so in her music. This was one of her major draws to rapping – being able to loose her inner beast, tackle solemn and painful topics in a humorous manner, and find peace in honest lyrics about nerd life.

Still new to rapping, she is constantly looking to improve, compose, and write music.

Deafinition started his Hip Hop career, not with flows, but poetry. He took to words like Wilford Brimley took to diabetes. Deafinition started writing his poetry at the age of 14, and continued to cultivate his talent with every stanza he burnt into the paper. By the age of 16, he was thrown into a violent, blood thirsty game called Rap. With no prior experience in this so called “Rap,” he began to weave his poetry into battle verses to slowly transform it into an evolving, unique style.

By the age of 18, he had dropped his first album and went on stage for the first time. This was the cornerstone of the foundation, and in later years, that foundation would grow into the Dark Tower of Babel that we all know as the Mighty Word Slinger: Deafinition.

Seattle-based Southside were the winners of Scrub Club’s Versus Mode Challenge!

Fusing their hip-hop roots with a punk rock ethos and the sounds of indie rock, Southside formed as a side project of several rock bands united to record haphazard rap songs between tours. While they began rapping over pre-recorded beats, Southside’s current lineup features a mix of beats and samples with live instrumentation: drums, guitar, bass, and a DJ. In recent years, Southside has played showcases at South by Southwest, Northwest Music Fest, REVERBfest, and Nerd Invasion.

Tony Snark

Following in his father’s footsteps, Tony Snark has been creating hand-forged sounds since a child– becoming the youngest scratch DJ at the age of 13. While observing the effects of his experimental beats on free-range cattle in Europe, Snark was captured by eastern european music producers and forced to re-create Wu Tang beats on a makeshift MPC constructed entirely out of parts from a 1976 Datsun B210. He narrowly escaped by throwing down a massive bass drop, the result of which damaged his heart, which is now only kept beating by an ipod chest plate with shuffle capabilities. Since then, Snark has vowed to rid the Earth of all wack DJs and producers, joining southside to battle anyone in his frequency range to save humanity from this terrible, growing threat.

Slim Dickens

Slim Dickens has used the guitar and keys to bring the rock to several Bellingham and Seattle bands throughout the years. A few years ago he had the fortune of meeting and working with Catfish (aka Buc Preston) and inevitably joined forces with the Southside militia. Slim’s buttery riff laden rock was injected with a healthy dose of meaty hip hop, rounding out the live band dynamic and formulating a formidable audio assault unit to back up the MCs.  Slim also heads up Southside’s visual assault unit, designing eye candy and propaganda to help promote the band and build the brand.  In his spare time, Slim enjoys long walks on the beach, quiet time at home, and going to Disneyland with his family.

Buc Preston

Damn, why did it have to go down like that. I knew better, we all knew better but here we are….again. I vaguely recall the smell of pine trees, maybe it was an air freshener, I don’t really know. Hell, I don’t really care. The only thing that matters anymore is the faith, the belief, the knowledge that this…this thing can never happen again.
God bless.

Reno

Reno was raised in the armpit of America also known as the biggest little city in the world. Yet, despite the rumor, it wasn’t big enough for this high powered rythym crazed mutant. So he left his home behind in search of like-minded soldiers to build an unstoppable militia of musical mayhem. Then at long last his search was rewarded when he crossed paths with Thunderball and Buc Preston who recruited RENO into the ranks of SOUTHSIDE. Sustained by syncopation, solid meter, and heavy grooves his raucous style creates a pocket big enough to accommodate soundscapes of cosmic proportions. Fueled by the yetti’s strength and the internal clock of an android RENO is a veritable force to be reckoned with when bringing the mutha’ effin’ ruckus. BEWARE!!!!!!!

Space

Space (aka yoga joe the foot cruncher) maintains the bottom end of Southside’s signature wall of sound.  Also known as a part-time beatmaker and hookwriter, he leads his own rock-n-roll side project (Seven Horses).  Space has also played with Sex in Taboo Creek, Mergatroid, and The Game Players.

Thunderball

Thunderball is the driving force behind Southside, co-founder and producer.  National runner-up in Chuck D’s Power to the People and the Beats competition and solo SS representative at the Nerd Invasion Versus Mode finals (bringin home that bacon).  Currently residing in the Orion sector of Moonbase IV and telecommuting via hologram.
