Artist: Beyond the Void
Released online June 2011
Running time: 48:22

Also featuring: Zinn, Deafinition, Cryptic Wisdom, Ajay tha Kidd, Lil’ $am, Droll, and Charlie Blaze.

Scrub Club Records started over a decade ago in the Midwest, an area of America that is a huge melting pot for musical influences from all genres and both coasts. Newly signed to Scrub Club in 2011, Beyond the Void brings that exact formula to the label: A Midwestern mix of combined genres.

It’s hard to classify this release. It can go from insightful Hip Hop musings to gritty, brutal rap lyrics, or a mixture of both. Behind it all is an obvious rock and metal influence. From emotional, furious tracks like “M0n5t3R,” “Lookin’ Out for Me,” and “Losing my Mind” … Laid back tracks like “Lay Me to Rest,” “Life is Unfair,” and “Losing Composure” … to damn-near rock ballads like “Lie to Me” and “Beautiful” … There is something for every listener on this release.

The 12 steps represent your journey through the number of tracks on the album. The 7 breaths? The Hagakure Kikigaki (Book of the Samurai) says, “With an intense, fresh, and undelaying spirit, one will make his judgments within the space of seven breaths. It is a matter of being determined and having the spirit to break right through to the other side.”

With such intense spirit, HDninja attacks you with their unique blend of quirky voices, rap cadence, punk energy, and experimental touches. This collection of their two pre-Scrub Club EPs is a must-have for all fans, and the download also contains two brand new, unreleased tracks!

Prepare for the second coming of the firestarter, wordslinger, phoenix: Deafinition!

Scrub Club’s prime lyricist is back with the album fans have been waiting for. Through life’s hardships, several equipment failures, different recording periods spanning a few years, and timed-out collaborations, Deafinition had a rough job getting this project to come to a finish… but he kept on working hard, refining his skills in the time between, and this project still shines, Frankenstein monster or not.

Deaf’s wordplay is second to none, as he takes you on far deeper emotional levels than your average rapper. Aside from his tough, deep material, there is also a crowd of collaborators lending their verses to the mix.

Cryptology: Cipher

Artist: Untested Methods
Released online December 2010
Running time: 72:33

Untested Methods reaches deep into the sound archives to bring you this collection of songs from a four year span of mad-doctoring instrumentals.

Even with the random age of some of these tracks, they all seem to fit together in perfect synergy. It’s best described as a 16bit soundtrack to the life story of a gritty anti-hero… Perhaps said being is Untested Methods after all. If that’s the case, you’re in for an audiobiographical treat.

Clocking in at well over an hour, this mix of electronic music is vastly instrumental and full of dark, energetic life. There is one song with vocals, however – “Out in the Black,” which is one of his first offerings from a low fidelity era. If you’ve ever wanted to take a ride in Untested’s brain Johnny Mnemonic-style, then this is your chance. Let the scenescapes of Cryptology: Cipher take you to distant digital lands.

Rust Covered Remixes

Artist: King Pheenix / MasDaMind
Released online December 2010
Running time: 27:40

Also Featuring: Eminem, Thunderball, and MadHatter.

A complete track-by-track remix of the first, smash hit King Pheenix album, but from a different side of the story!

All 6 of the original songs from the “Hero vs. Villain” album have been lying in the gutter, slowly regenerating and mutating… After a month, the tracks were retrieved, but these were now genetically altered – the beats have been switched out, speeds were changed, genres were crisscrossed… But there’s one thing scientists can confirm: They are indeed fresh specimens for your ears.

The appropriately-named remixer MasDaMind has mashed up each track for a completely new, surprisingly quirky effect. See what your good or evil faction has been missing!

Songs and Voices

Artist: Untested Methods
Originally released online 2009
Re-released online 2010
Running time: 20:32

The “Songs and Voices” EP is a mixed bag (of holding). While it contains both things Untested is well-known for (nerdy subject matter and emotional singing), it doesn’t approach either straight-on as you might expect.

For instance, there’s a track about vampires. One about the hit game “Fallout.” And another about Dungeons and Dragons. But they’re not readily visible with key words and situations you normally hear about, they’re described more in an thoughtful sense. Sound different? Well, it certainly is.

The “mixed bag” comment comes from the fact that there really is no central theme going on with this project… The music is just what came to life when Untested Methods combined electronic beats, acoustic guitar, and his own vocals. The end result is fluid, trippy music that will bounce back and forth inside of your head as these strange ballads take you deeper into the eclectic mind of Untested.
