Yeah.. so that weight loss thing? I didn’t do so well the first week. I can attribute it to a lot things: increased hours at work, jacked up schedule for 2 days when Brett worked 3rd shift, etc. I know better though. I didn’t stick to my plan. Hey.. I said I become distracted easily right?

So I took a harder look at what I’ve been eating, how I’ve been sleeping and how often I’ve let myself slip and have something I shouldn’t. My first thought was “screw this.” when I saw I had gained instead of lost any pounds. Then I thought about how I didn’t keep up my end of the bargain so why should my weight comply? So I’m not quitting, I’ll just try harder.

Day 7

I went for 3 miles on the treadmill, took a little under 1 hour. After that, I did a bit of a cooldown on a cycling machine, 1.5 miles in around 15 minutes.

I decided to start with more cardio until I get used to owrking out a bit more. This will probably increase the number of times I go to the gym, since i’m not going to be all sore from the night before.

Other than that, i’m sticking with the maximum of 1 pop a day, only a week in and there’s been a few days that I haven’t had any.

Day 9

Wasn’t feel the best tonight, so I cut my trip to the gym a bit short.

We’re off to a pretty good start, fair ladies and gentlebeasts!

In an unpredictable start to Gain HP (the first week of a weight loss program is always weird), some adventurers lost an amazing amount of weight, some lost a normal chunk, some stayed exactly the same, and some even gained weight. In this type of a program, the first week either sets a pace for you, or lets you know it’s time to get serious and switch up your routine. Whatever the result for you, the time is now to kick it into high gear and go for the gold (coins)!

Hell yeah. I lost 11 pounds the first week! I know the results will probably start slowing down at this point, but I’m extremely proud of myself and my fellow adventurers.

My diet has drastically changed, and thanks to my wife’s amazing cooking, that’s been an actual pleasure. Also, getting daily exercise is something of a miracle compared to my past… I’ve already starting noticing results: My kneecaps aren’t sliding out as much. I walk a little straighter. My endurance for walking and being out in the heat have gotten a lot better. My breathing has improved. I’ve started sweating a lot less. My complexion is clearing up. With more sleep, I’ve been waking up earlier and much more easily. The days seem to flow in a perfect schedule.

Rolling a Better You

There is something inherently odd about the nerd psyche that compels us to forsake our mortal shells. Whether it be through engrossing ourselves in reading or vegging out playing an MMO, we geeks often neglect pesky annoyances like, you know, exercise and proper diet.

Sure, there are many in this brave new generation of dorks who manage to balance both their D&D campaign and a healthy lifestyle, but I ain’t one of ‘em. Instead, I find that I must trick myself into being a healthier person.

Earlier this year I embarked on my own Pokewalker Fitness Challenge, leveraging the allure of videogames to help me stay active. Now, long after the conclusion of the contest proper, I still find myself slapping my Pichu-strapped pedometer on each morning. I have integrated a learned behavior (calculating my walking) into my daily routine that positively impacts my overall wellbeing. Sure, some days I only log a measly 5000 steps, but it’s a tangible thing that I can wrap my head around.
